At its simplest telematics is the integration of computers and
communications enabling information services to be delivered via a
communications network. It has come to refer largely to vehicle monitoring
systems which enable services such as roadside assistance, vehicle
diagnostics and navigation services. It includes location-based services
and functions such as accessing the internet, receiving or sending e-mail
and downloading digital audio and video files whilst in a car or other
vehicle. One of the most significant opportunities, particularly in terms
of scale, involves proof of activity (delivery notes, orders, invoices
etc.,) applications. Vehicle telematics also plays a part in Intelligent
Transport Systems (ITS) which are largely public policy transport
initiatives including schemes such as road pricing, traffic monitoring and
emissions monitoring which are designed to contribute to safer cleaner and
more efficient transport
This report highlights how progressive wireless operators such as
T-Mobile, Nextel and FarEasTone are addressing the growing Telematics
opportunity. The report focuses on those applications which offer the
greatest potential to stimulate wireless operator revenues over the next 2-3
years.
