Improving the Mobile Device UI

April 2003 (14 pages)
As mobile devices incorporate more complex on-board intelligence and provide access to client and server-based applications and content, the customer is faced with a growing and potentially baffling array of choices.

Over the last decade, we have seen PC-based operating systems become more efficient and more refined. Improved 'intuitivism/ease of use' has been the principal focus and many companies have developed businesses providing more convenient, personalised and efficient use of the PC. The arrival of PDAs over recent years has generated a similar wealth of UI innovation, with companies such as WebIS and Pimlico software, respective authors of PocketInformant and DateBk5, developing ever-improving solutions, with each new OS release.

With the move towards standardised OS and greater application diversity on mobile devices, it is no surprise to find similar solution providers emerging to address this market opportunity. However, in the case of mobile devices, the justification for delivering such solutions is even more compelling. In addition to the usual market among end-users who want personalisation and efficiency benefits, there is also a market among mobile operators and service providers who recognise that greater personalisation and greater mobile device interactivity enables greater opportunities for ARPU enhancement.
