About Update #10 (February 2009)

This update follows captures promotional offers implemented by mobile operators during the later half of 2008 and early January 2009:

  • 2008 saw a considerable amount of activity in the area of mobile broadband as operators moved beyond postpaid mobile broadband packages offering customers various methods of pre-payment. Customers have been enticed with offers of subsidized laptops and netbooks in addition to a postpaid mobile broadband subscription and discounts where customers bundle their existing mobile (voice tariff) subscription with a mobile broadband contract. Operators have also been found encouraging customers to take up a mobile broadband package as part of their converged (home phone and DSL) service.
  • As 2008 drew to a close, many mobile operators promoted value added incentives such television sets, speakers and digital photo frames in order to spur on handset sales in both the prepaid and postpaid segment. Operators continue to offer customers group (discounted) on-net calling between friends and family members both in the postpay and prepay segments as well as via youth orientated schemes. Referral programs remain prominent across a select number of mobile operators with particular innovations in the use of social networking in order to attract referrals.
