A significant number of wireless operators around the world launched "Home Zone" services with a range of approaches and varying results. Some of these services offered discounts on calls made within very limited areas (the home or a business location) while others followed a more regional approach, offering discounts on calls made within a city or metropolitan area, or even wider, provincial boundaries. The common objective of these services was a combination of competitive differentiation from other mobile players in the market and substitution of at least some fixed network minutes by mobile phone users.
Because they wish to be seen as innovative and advanced, the marketing focus of solution providers tends to be at the leading edge of the functionality that markets and technology can support. Consequently, the ability to support network operators in the deployment of advanced non-voice, data applications is at the forefront of their promotional messages.
However, as demonstrated in the report Evaluation of 'Home Zone' Solutions published in March 2005, there are still homezone offerings available that deliver considerable benefit to the network operators that maintain them. This means that should a network operator determine that market conditions are right for a homezone solution implementation, then they must identify solution providers that are not necessarily advertising their capabilities.
As part of the research examining homezone solutions, a number of solution providers were contacted and their capabilities and approach to this area of functionality identified. This report summarises the information gathered in this research process, so that program clients that may have an interest in homezone offerings will have a starting point for selecting potential partners.
