LBS Opportunities in the Enterprise Market

July 2004 (16 pages)
Location Based Services have traditionally been over-hyped by industry analysts. As recently as 2001, the consensus among analysts was that LBS would become an EUR 80 billion market by 2007. Today, the consensus is that the LBS market will struggle to cross the EUR 10 billion threshold by then. Nevertheless, confidence is beginning to grow and wireless operators are finally taking steps to develop this market and optimise the revenue opportunity.

In this current report we examine the technological choices currently available to wireless operators seeking to implement LBS. We identify the solutions suited to different needs and applications, outlining their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Additionally, we profile the solutions currently being developed and promoted by operators. We also reveal the enterprise segments which have demonstrated the greatest potential for LBS use to date.

Moving beyond the technology, we explore the underlying LBS market value chain and explain the roles carried out by the various participants within this chain. We identify the players operators must partner with where they seek to deliver a broad range of LBS services, with different levels of accuracy, reliability, convenience and cost, reflecting different applications and customer needs.

We conclude with a mini case study focusing on Telenor Mobil, one of Europe's leading LBS operators. With its adoption of a wholesale market development model, encouraging third party delivery of LBS services, Telenor Mobil has seen service use increase tenfold over the course of the last year. We examine the innovative business model it has adopted, which has also allowed the company to turn a profit with its LBS services by the end of 2003.
