Understanding the Corporate Market

April 2003 (21 pages)
The size of the enterprise market and its value to mobile operators is often underestimated. Over the past decade, consumers have accounted for the vast majority of mobile subscriber growth. Indeed consumers now account for almost 80% of all mobile users in the mature European market where overall population penetration now exceeds 78%.

While the consumer market accounts for the majority of end users, enterprise customers continue to generate the majority of operator revenues, even in mature market conditions.

Europe-wide, Mobile Market Development estimates that 21% of mobile users are enterprise users, with mobiles used for business and paid for by the business. The corporate market (250+ employees) accounts for one quarter of this. The balance is accounted for by SMEs.

In many cases, operators underestimate the extent to which they depend on the enterprise market. This is because they frequently misclassify self employed and small business users using consumer retail channels, as consumers.
