In terms of ICT deployment (e.g. Internet access), Dutch SMEs are above the European average and second only to enterprises operating in Scandinavian markets. A survey by Compaq (subsequently taken over by Hewlett Packard) in early 2002 found that as many as 73% of managers in SMEs want anytime and anywhere access to the Internet and the company network. Of the 429 SME directors and 981 SME IT managers Compaq interviewed, over three-quarters of them regarded communication with customers and colleagues as the most important application.
In this context, given SMEs' ICT readiness and the potential in terms of subscriber numbers, KPN Mobile has taken the lead in offering SMEs innovative mobile applications through a service called 'Lucio'. The Lucio service, which is marketed with HP and Microsoft, enables mobile employees to manage their company e-mail, appointments and address books from any location.
Most advanced wireless operators offer their SME customers some form of e-mail access service. The Lucio service differs from other offerings, as it is a complete 'package', the result of cooperation between a leading wireless operator and two key players in the IT sector.
