O2 first launched the xda in the Netherlands in May 2002. The UK and German market launches took place a month later. The Irish market launch followed in July. The product has since been launched in a variety of other markets by operators such as Telstra and Optus, in Australia and Optimus in Portugal.
The xda was produced in collaboration with Microsoft, which provided the PocketPC 2002 phone edition OS and the Taiwan based manufacturer HTC.
Here we examine the launch, and the packaging and promotion of the device. We consider the feedback from users and examine the impact the device has had on the bill spend of users. We also explore the factors which lead one UK dealer to make the following contradictory comment; "It is a fantastic product and we have sold a few"
