About Update #8 (December 2007)

This update follows on from the November 2007 update of mobile promotional offers and brings the database to almost 1,200 entries, and captures promotional offers implemented by mobile operators up to and including the Christmas period:

  • Operators continue to be engaged in encouraging trial and stimulating consumption of mobile content particularly in the area of Mobile Internet, Music , TV as well as sports content. This has been facilitated in the roll out of unlimited data browsing packages where operators across the board are offering customers one-month free trials
  • The Christmas season ensured that mobile operators offered value added incentives such as gifts (digital photo frames, headphones, speakers, lip gloss etc. Prepay customers were also incentivised with gift items in addition to benefits such as on-net calls/text, MMS and mobile Internet browsing. As is the norm many promotions focused on top-up/monthly spend rewards offering additional and bonus on-net calling and text allocations to both prepay and postpay customers
  • Operators continued to encourage group (discounted) on-net calling between friends and family members both in the postpay and prepay segments. A considerable promotional effort has been made by operators to migrate customers to new tariff plans offering unlimited on-net and landline calling in addition to SMS/MMS and mobile Internet services. Referral programs rewarding existing customers for recommending new customers that join the network remain prominent across a select number of mobile operators as do triple play initiatives
